Motivation Romania’s founding partner is Motivation U.K. Its primary mission was, and remains to a great degree, to provide supports to individuals with spinal cord injuries. They relate to their consumers on at least two levels: (1) they provide “active habilitation; and (2) they build custom wheelchairs. You will see the new wheelchair factory that has just been completed. At least half of the workforce at the wheelchair factory are former consumers.
The staff at Motivation Romania were eager to step forward to meet the challenge of developing the residential component of the children’s project. They have done far more than we could have ever been imagined and reached children we never dreamed we could help. They exceeded all of our expectations! Sport is very much a part of Motivation Romania’s program – wheelchair basketball, tennis, table tennis and excursions are an important aspect of their work.
Cristian Ispas is the director of Motivation Romania. He holds an MBA from Drexel University in Philadelphia, and also serves as the Director of Special Olympics in Romania.
- Keystone Human Services International Moldova Association (KHSIMA)
KHSIMA was established to promote and develop opportunities that will be in the form of direct service, best-practice training, monetary and administrative supports to further the independence of people who are in need of service due to disabling conditions, situations of poverty, abandonment, institutionalization and other adverse societal conditions throughout Moldova. KHSIMA provides services, supports and programs designed to improve the lives of children and families in Moldova through our Bright Beginnings Centers. These community-based centers are located in Brinza and Tudora, and are built on the very successful and acclaimed head Start model in the United States.
The Speranta Center for Social Integration of Children with Disabilities was created out of necessity by a group of parents facing challenges brought along by the condition of their children. The main objectives of the Center are the multifunctional, educational recuperation and social integration of children with disabilities. They also fight against institutionalization.
The children come from poor and middle income families. Rehabilitation programs offered are kinetic therapy, education/teaching, occupational therapy, speech therapy and personal autonomy. Educational and socialization programs are also offered. The Center’s staff organize seminars for NGO leaders and accountants on management, fundraising, writing projects, accounting, public relations, etc. Trainings are also offered for persons who are involved in the rehabilitation process of children with disabilities.
Lucia Gavrilita serves as the executive director and co-founder of Speranta. As one of the founders of the Association of Parents of Children with Disabilities she participates and supports parent advocacy for the social integration of children with disabilities where appropriate services and support are not readily available.
