Celebrate National Disability Employment Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) provides the perfect opportunity for ANCOR providers to recognize the successes of workers with disabilities and their employers.
On October 1st, President Obama released a Presidential Proclamation declaring October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The United States Department of Labor makes available materials for people to use in recognizing the month in their communities or organizations. This year’s theme is “Talent Has No Boundaries: Workforce Diversity INCLUDES Workers with Disabilities The theme was chosen to show the public that workers with disabilities have valuable skills and talents that are an asset in the workplace. We, as providers, embrace these philosophical tenets and know that, across the United States, October will herald a flurry of activities as ANCOR members capitalize on this opportunity to increase public awareness and create a renewed commitment to integrated employment for individuals with disabilities.
Many ANCOR members who provide employment supports work tirelessly to champion the cause but fight an uphill battle attempting to overcome the barriers and disincentives that people with disabilities face in regard to integrated employment. ANCOR members are encouraged to use October as on opportunity to pursue a host of activities to demonstrate their support and educate the general public, local businesses, Congressional delegation and state and local officials, and the media year-round about the capabilities of people with disabilities.
Suggested activities include:
- Hold a National Disability Employment Awareness Month event that recognizes accomplishments of the people you serve in their jobs and the employers that have partnered with your agency. Invite local and state dignitaries, media, and business and community leaders to attend.
- Host an open house at your agency. Invite locals businesses, and Federal state and local officials to meet your staff and learn more about the employment and vocational services you provide.
- Consider special events to celebrate significant milestones and achievements and accolades, including new contract signings, awards, new strategic partners, civic initiatives and groundbreakings at your physical plant.
- Plan an “Employer Appreciation Day” and present certificates or other recognition items to employers.
The following tactics will be helpful if you plan to host or coordinate an event:
- Remember to write and distribute a press release alerting the media to the date, time, location and purpose of your event. Be sure to include the names of any special guests, especially the name of your Senator, Congressman, governor, or mayor.
- Hang posters and decorate bulletin boards with NDEAM information.
