Additional Federal Medicaid Funding Unlikely, Says Congress and NGA

February 8, 2011

Given the game-changing elections in November—as well as the legislative agenda for both parties—do not expect Congress to support additional federal Medicaid funding following the 2010 extension through June 31, 2011.

In regards to this issue, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) stated on January 17, 2011, that “most of the solutions will have to come from the states.”New House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) said on January 7, 2011, “no” and “he was not interested in any more bailouts.” In fact, the real battle will be around cutting and/or reforming Medicaid.

In meetings this week, ANCOR had this opinion confirmed byNationalGovernors Association (NGA)staff.States are not interested in asking for additional federal funding, but in greater flexibility and “re-envisioning” their Medicaid programs.
