Three Congressional Resignations This Week

Attention around Members of Congress who have had complaints about their behavior continued to increase this week, culminating in three resignations:

  • Senator Al Franken (D-MN) was the first to announce resignation this week due to multiple sexual harassment complaints. Governor Dayton of Minnesota is expected to appoint a replacement very soon – the replacement would hold Senator Franken’s seat until a special election can be held to fill out the rest of his term. At the end of that term, the seat will be open for election again. Read more here.
  • U.S. Representative Trent Franks (R-AZ) also announced his resignation following former staff complaints. A special election will be held to replace him. Read more here.
  • U.S. Representative John Conyers (D-MI), is resigning after being accused of sexually harassing multiple staffers. A special election will be held to replace him, which might pit two Conyers family members against each other. Read more about the resignation here.
