At the start of this new Congress, two U.S. Senators announced they would not seek re-election in 2020 when their terms end:
U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander , R-TN.
U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, R-KY.
Senator Alexander sits on two committees relevant to I/DD issues: the Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP Committee), which oversees the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal funding. While committee assignments will be reshuffled in general following the 2020 election, Senator Alexander’s retirement will influence the reshuffling to some extent since his preferences for committee placement – a perk of seniority in the Senate – will not have to be accounted for.
