The Ask:

Call on your Representative and Senators to support the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, a common sense and bipartisan bill to end forced poverty for people with disabilities.

The Details:

The SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act aims to bring about substantial changes to the Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) program to enhance beneficiaries’ ability to work and save without jeopardizing their vital benefits.

Raise the Asset Limit: Increase the SSI asset limit from $2,000 to $10,000 for individuals and index it to inflation, providing much-needed financial flexibility. The proposed legislation also aims to rectify the harmful penalty against married couples by increasing the limit for couples from a mere $3,000 to $20,000.

Promote financial responsibility: The existing limits discourage individuals receiving SSI from saving for their future. An increased limit would empower beneficiaries to achieve greater autonomy and financial stability.

At its core, the legislation would empower SSI beneficiaries to develop savings, fostering financial independence and self-sufficiency.
