CMS Announces Extension of State Reporting of Medicaid Renewals Outcomes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a State Health Official (SHO) letter last week announcing an extension of state reporting requirements for specific Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) metrics. These reporting metrics, initially established during the transition back to full Medicaid and CHIP renewals—often referred to as “unwinding”—will continue beyond the expiration of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, on June 30, 2024.

According to the SHO letter, states will maintain their reporting on Medicaid and CHIP renewal outcomes to ensure transparency in the eligibility and enrollment processes. This ongoing reporting will provide valuable insights into individuals’ ability to renew their coverage and help maintain public accountability.

This extended reporting initiative underscores CMS’ dedication to transparency and accountability, ensuring that the public and stakeholders have access to comprehensive information about the performance of Medicaid and CHIP programs across different states. The continued collection and dissemination of this data will play a crucial role in identifying trends, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in the delivery of health care services to low-income individuals and families.
