On Tuesday, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) released a Health Workforce Strategic Plan as mandated by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The plan outlines how the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will use the $7.6 billion appropriated under the American Rescue Plan Act to carry out activities related to establishing, expanding, and sustaining a public health workforce. The plan defines “health workforce” as including direct support professionals.

The strategic plan “provides a forward-looking framework for health workforce improvements, focused on four key goals: expanding supply, ensuring equitable distribution, improving quality, and enhancing the use of data and evidence to improve program outcomes.”
