With last December’s shocking attack in San Bernardino and the impending 2016 hurricane season, we are reminded that emergency preparedness is vital to ensuring the safety and security of our workforce and the people we serve, as well as our agencies’ continued operations in the face of overwhelming uncertainty wrought by devastating events.
Are you really prepared for any type of disaster that might affect your agency or operations? Larry Weishaar will share lessons learned and a planning guide that ResCare developed to ensure agencies have plans and processes in place to manage through any type of disaster. This presentation will provide specifics of developing a thorough disaster plan, including how to prepare staff for a catastrophic event. He will address considerations such as:
- Planning and packing up to relocate;
- Food and shelter requirements;
- Communication to all involved;
- Staffing and their families;
- Medication and other healthcare needs;
- Short-term vs. long-term deployment/displacement;
- After an event actions (e.g., re-build, re-hire staff, etc.);
- Use of another provider/agency-sites of service, staff, supports
Larry Weishaar is the Vice President of Quality Assurance for ResCare, leading the team that coordinates ResCare's Quality Management Systems, Customer Satisfaction and Critical Incident Management. In addition, Larry coordinates ResCare’s emergency and disaster planning activities, including responses to both Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Hurricane Sandy in the New York City area. Larry began his career in this field while in college providing direct support to persons with disabilities and has grown through many changes in our industry. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Indiana University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Troy State University. Larry is currently a member of the Board of Trustees for the ANCOR Foundation and a member of ANCOR’s Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Committee. Larry is also a former member of the ANCOR Board of Directors.
