Bill to Increase SSI Disregards Introduced

On July 19, Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) introduced the Supplemental Security Income [SSI] Restoration Act (H.R. 3307). When calculating SSI benefits, certain income received by an individual is disregarded for purposes of calculating eligibility. The bill would increase some of the current disregard limits. The bill would increase the general income disregard to $114/month and the earned income disregard to $377/month. Additionally, the bill would increase resource limits to $10,000 for an individual and $20,000 for a couple. These amounts were last adjusted in 1972. Finally, the bill would repeal SSI’s in-kind support and maintenance provisions as well as penalties for resource transfers, marriage, and state tax credits.
