It’s finally Fall, which means that it is almost time for Halloween! Halloween is one of MediSked’s favorite holidays. It can be exciting at any age and we’ve compiled some tips for celebrating in an inclusive, fun, and safe way.
All you need for this is a few large pumpkins with stems and some glow sticks to toss.
Pin the bow tie on Mr. Bones
Either create a cut out of skeleton or purchase one from the dollar store. Craft a bow tie and the game plays just like pin the tail on the donkey.
Spread spider webs (the white stretchy kind) in a space (doorway, corner of the room, etc.). Have players start behind a line and toss little plastic spiders at the web until they can get three spiders stuck.
Face the Cookie
Have each player place a cookie on their forehead. They must move the cookie from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands.
Spooky Dance Party
Song recommendations: Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett, Thriller by Michael Jackson, Ghost Busters Theme Song, Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran, Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley, and This is Halloween from The Nightmare before Christmas.
Halloween Themed Sensory Guessing Games
Examples: Dried apricots for ears, peeled grapes for eyeballs, cooked spaghetti for brains.
“Scary” Movie Night
Movie Recommendations: Nightmare Before Christmas, Ghostbusters, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Beetlejuice, Teen Wolf, The Addams Family, Harry Potter Movies
The Teal Pumpkin Project is a nationwide movement to create a safer and happier Halloween for all people. If a house has a teal pumpkin on its doorstep, it means that they will have non-food treats available. This creates a more inclusive Halloween for individuals that may have food allergies, restricted diets, or other conditions.
Please feel free to spread awareness of the Teal Pumpkin Project widely with your staff and the families that you support. Here are some fun ideas for alternative treats:
Coloring Books and Crayons
Plastic Critters like Spiders or Bugs
Have a Happy Halloween!
