ANCOR Writes Letter Supporting Bill Funding Autism Supports Abroad

As an update to this article announcing the introduction of the Global Brain Health Act of 2019, ANCOR sent a letter of support for this international autism funding bill to the bill’s original sponsors, U.S. Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Karen Bass (D-CA). This legislation recognizes the importance of international disability supports. ANCOR has members who offer supports for people with intellectual / developmental disabilities (I/DD), including autism, abroad and ANCOR also has an active International Council (contact [email protected] if you are interested in joining).

As written in the letter:

“The bill’s grant program for NGOs that assist families shows an understanding of the importance of early intervention and systemic supports at an individual level. Additionally, the “teach the teacher” component of the Global Brain Health Act promises to improve a child or adult with autism’s health care and social life by targeting teachers and health professionals. Not only would well-equipped professionals offer better supports and care to the individual, but they would also set an example for peers on how to respect and support the individual. Given the importance of a person developing natural supports such as friends, colleagues and romantic partners, the efforts supported by your bill could carry over into every aspect of an individual’s life. We are grateful that your bill shows the importance of supporting individuals in a wholistic manner.”
