Bipartisan Probe Begins of Medicaid Managed Care

Last week, Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) of the Senate Finance Committee which oversees Medicaid issues, was joined by Senator Casey (D-PA), a leading disability advocate and Ranking Member of the Senate Aging Committee, in issuing letters to Administrator Verma of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as well as eight external quality review organizations (EQROs) that audit managed care organizations and requesting answers to specific questions. ANCOR had been given a heads up about the probe as it developed.

As noted in the letter to Administrator Verma:

 “In order to ensure these changes do not cause disruptions for vulnerable people who tend to have significant health care needs, it is incumbent upon CMS and states to ensure adequate oversight. Managed care has the potential to improve outcomes and save money by streamlining health care services, and in many cases that has been documented. However, the Medicaid managed care program must be responsive to the unique needs of those beneficiaries with disabilities who depend upon MLTSS.”
