Attention around Members of Congress who have had complaints about their behavior continued to increase this week, culminating in three resignations:
Senator Al Franken (D-MN) was the first to announce resignation this week due to multiple sexual harassment complaints. Governor Dayton of Minnesota is expected to appoint a replacement very soon – the replacement would hold Senator Franken’s seat until a special election can be held to fill out the rest of his term. At the end of that term, the seat will be open for election again. Read more here.
U.S. Representative Trent Franks (R-AZ) also announced his resignation following former staff complaints. A special election will be held to replace him. Read more here.
U.S. Representative John Conyers (D-MI), is resigning after being accused of sexually harassing multiple staffers. A special election will be held to replace him, which might pit two Conyers family members against each other. Read more about the resignation here.
