Last week, Justice Stephen Breyer announced his plans to retire from the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Breyer has served on the Court since 1994. His retirement gives President Biden his first opportunity to nominate a justice to the Supreme Court.
President Biden has not yet announced a nominee but has stated: “The person I will nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity. And that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has stated that he intends to advance the nomination quickly and confirm the nominee around a month after the President announces his choice. The President is expected to announce his nominee by the end of February.
