JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Payroll Tax Services manages a large, multi-disciplinary transaction services team that will process upwards of $1 billion annually in payroll tax payments and filings across 15+ states and in support of over 100,000 employer accounts. The position is responsible for leading operational best practices and standards across multiple domains. The Director will evaluate, design, and execute scaled operations for large, complex customer-facing engagements. The Director will be a tactical and strategic leader, working as a liaison across internal departments. The Director enjoys working with operations and technical staff to promote a performance-driven culture in a rapid growth environment.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- 6+ years of experience managing in a high-volume, multi-state tax services environment, with expert-level knowledge of payroll tax processes using both automated systems and manual methods
- Comprehensive knowledge of payroll tax regulations, including IRS rules for Fiscal/Employer Agent (FEA) processing, Difficulty of Care payment exemptions (including IRS Notice 2014-7 and applicable Internal Revenue Code sections), family member payroll tax exemptions, and FICA tax refund procedures for exempt payments
- CPA preferred
- Experience with ADP MasterTax, Workday, or equivalent systems required; experience with Dynamics Solomon is a plus
- Proven ability to adapt in a fast-paced, evolving environment while managing multiple priorities and supporting rapid growth and scale
- Demonstrated ability to foster and model a high-performance culture that is positive, collaborative, respectful, and results-driven
- Strong ethical standards, consistently demonstrating integrity, sound judgment, and professionalism
- Experience managing fully remote teams is a plus, with the ability to work flexible and/or extended hours as needed
- Ability to travel up to 15% as required
- Must be able to successfully pass a background screening and, for remote or hybrid roles, employees must provide their own reliable internet service
The incumbent typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone, and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday.

Roles & Responsibilities
JOB DUTIES
- Apply leadership skills to manage, direct, monitor, counsel, and evaluate supervisory staff to promote transparency and quality and to drive process improvement efficiencies.
- Apply and train on knowledge of payroll tax regulations, specifically IRS rules governing Fiscal/Employer Agent (FEA) payroll tax processing and Difficulty of Care payments exemptions, including compliance with IRS Notice 2014-7 and relevant sections of the Internal Revenue Code.
- Oversee accurate and timely completion of daily tax deposits, quarterly and annual 941- type filings, multiple state employer filings, annual information, and W2 reporting
- Establish and nurture relationships with tax agencies and be prepared to advocate for an organization to assist with the automation of high-volume tax processes
- Direct and champion key performance metrics, service level agreements, incentives, and staff development programs to drive day-to-day delivery of services.
- Hire, train, and manage the teams as assigned.
- Identify and select external supports to support recovery efforts and business continuity.
- Demonstrate exemplary problem-solving and delegated decision-making skills.
- Oversee management and resolution of tax notice issues.
- Prepare and deliver regular progress reports/briefings to senior leadership.
