There Is No Substitute for Advocacy

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Missouri Advocacy Day at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. As a Direct Support Professional in home health care, I believe advocacy is an essential part of our work. This year I brought several of the people I support so they could experience civic engagement firsthand. For many of them, this was their first time visiting Jefferson City and speaking directly with legislators. It was an empowering and educational experience.

During our meetings with legislators, we discussed the critical importance of maintaining funding for programs and services that support individuals with disabilities. We emphasized how proposed budget cuts could directly impact access to essential care, independence, and quality of life. Most importantly, people with disabilities had the opportunity to share their own stories and perspectives while speaking directly to decision-makers.

The experience reinforced how powerful it is when individuals advocate for themselves. Watching them confidently express their needs and explain why these services matter was incredibly powerful. It highlighted the importance of protecting resources that allow people with disabilities to live fulfilling, supported lives within their communities.

Missouri Advocacy Day was not only informative, but inspiring. It strengthened my commitment to advocacy and to ensuring that the individuals we support continue to have representation at the legislative levels. Hopefully, I can continue to advocate for the people with disabilities that I support, and help mentor individuals who want to continue having their voices heard.
