This morning, ANCOR CEO Barbara Merrill issued the following statement in response to the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

On behalf of the entire ANCOR community, we mourn the loss of a civil rights giant, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We extend our deepest condolences to Justice Ginsburg’s family as they grieve this profound loss.

We also celebrate Justice Ginsburg’s life, and today we honor her legacy, defined by a long and storied career defending the civil rights of all people, including and especially people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As the author of the majority opinion in the Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. LC (1999), Justice Ginsburg cemented the right of people to live within the community, rather than in institutions. Her work gave power to the promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and she will forever be remembered as a champion of the rights of millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
