The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), Public Law 104-191, was enacted on August 21, 1996. Since the law's enaction, regulations have been promulgated several times to implement HIPAA. Regulations include:

In 2013, a final rule impelmenting the HITECH Act was issued to strengthen the privacy and security protections for health information established under HIPAA.
