PHI Releases 2022 Annual Report on the Direct Care Workforce

On September 6, PHI released its 2022 annual report on the direct care workforce, Direct Care Workers in the United States: Key Facts.

Highlights from the report include:

• From 2011 to 2021, the direct care workforce saw large growth, and is expected to add an estimated 1.2 million new jobs from 2020 to 2030—more new jobs than any other occupation in the country. The predicted job growth is anticipated to occur primarily in the home and community-based services sector.
• The direct care workforce continues to be predominantly comprised of women, people of color, and immigrants.
• In 2021, the median wage for direct care workers was $14.27, with median annual earnings for direct care workers at $21,700.
• Forty percent of direct care workers live in low-income households, and forty-three percent rely on public assistance, such as Medicaid, food and nutrition assistance, or cash assistance.
