Behavior is Not a Bad Word

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is all about building up an environment for success and learning skills that are meaningful and rooted in choice. Behavior supports, when used ethically, are powerful tools to help make sure that everyone can access the community. Community inclusion needs to include everyone. This includes people who have historically not been able to access services because either they currently communicate using challenging behavior or have a history of doing so.

When professionals are not trained in the history and values of this work, service can harm (both people supported and staff) more than it helps. Wise has been training PBS specialists in a new way to disrupt that cycle of harm. Join us for this webinar in which we’ll unpack this history together, and we’ll share exactly what and how we train PBS specialists so you can replicate it back home.

In this session, attendees will:

• Understand the importance of considering the history of behavior supports from a diverse and intersectional viewpoint which includes the perspectives of people with lived experience talking about how they want to be served.
• Consider how focusing on PBS supports in employment is essential to building up our service system and developing and retaining great staff.
• Practice a coaching model that follows a motivational interviewing (MI) approach, so that participants can support other professionals to reach their goals.
