The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized a third Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine dose for certain immunocompromised individuals.

The FDA amended the emergency use authorization to allow for the use of an additional dose in certain immunocompromised individuals, “specifically, solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromised. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices agreed and moved the recommendation forward. The CDC officially approved the recommendation for the third dose providing a path for individuals with moderately to severely compromised immune systems to receive an additional dose of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.
