The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the latest enrollment figures for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). In each of these programs, the latest reports show increases in enrollment. The latest Medicaid and CHIP enrollment trends snapshot indicates that as of November 2021, 85,809,179 people are enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP. These latest figures represent an increase of 980,636 since the last report.

CMS also released the 2021-2030 National Health Expenditure (NHE) report through the CMS Office of the Actuary. The NHE report includes projections of health care spending, tracked by source of funding, type of service, and whether government-sponsored or privately sponsored. The NHE report demonstrates that despite increased demand for services in 2021, the growth in national health spending is estimated to have slowed from 9.7% in 2020 to 4.2% due to declining federal COVID-19 supplemental funding. That decline in health care utilization is expected to rebound and normalize through 2024.
