This past Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee convened a hearing to discuss the President’s proposed budget for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Fiscal Year 2024. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra attended the hearing and was called to testify on the budget proposal.

In his opening remarks, Secretary Becerra emphasized the administration’s commitment to home and community-based services (HCBS) through its proposed investment of $150 billion. He emphasized that this investment would be critical in supporting aging Americans and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) who prefer to receive care in their own homes and communities.

Representatives Pallone (D-NJ), Kuster (D-NH), and Barragan (D-CA) also used their time during the hearing to support investments in HCBS. They emphasized the importance of these services in improving the quality of life for seniors and people with I/DD, while also providing much-needed support to their families.
